Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs.

Stems: Stems usually prostrate, occasionally erect and forming large shrubs up to 3 m tall (apparently in response to browsing), many-branched, young branches grayish, drooping.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound (odd-pinnate). Alternate. Blades oblong–oblanceolate or sometimes oblong–elliptic, 2–7 cm long, leaflets (11–)15–25, coriaceous, (0.8–)1–1.5(–2.3) cm long, 0.3–0.7 cm wide. Apex mucronate. Base cuneate, sessile. Upper surfaces glossy, sparsely appressed long pilose, especially along the slightly impressed midrib; lower surfaces moderately to densely strigose. Margins entire. Upper surface conspicuously raised–reticulate veins. Rachis usually narrowly winged, petioles 0.3–0.8 cm long. Stipules distinct, brownish, darker at the tip, subulate, ca. 3–5 mm long, caducous.

Flowers: Flowers usually 3–6 in cymes grouped into terminal, subcorymbose inflorescences, each one subtended by 1–2 subulate bracteoles 3–5 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or sometimes unisexual. Receptacle ca. 2–3 mm long, cup–shaped, adnate to ovary, densely tomentose externally, glabrous within. Calyx lobes 5, triangular–deltate, ca. 2.5 mm long, tomentose externally, glabrous within, persistent. Corolla of 5 petals, white, broadly obovate, clawed, 7–11 mm long; styles subequal, ca. 5–6 mm long, lower part arachnoid pubescent. Stamens 15–20. Ovary inferior, 2–5-carpellate; ovules 1 per cell; styles 5, distinct; stigmas thickened and truncate.

Fruit: Fruit white; the flesh white or purple; subglobose; ca. 10 mm in diameter; outer surface tomentose when young; glabrate; endocarps angular; ca. 5 mm long; 2 sides plane; the other rounded. Seeds yellowish; ca. 1.5 mm in diameter.

Ploidy: 2n = 34*

Habitat: Locally common in a wide variety of habitats such as coastal cliffs; open lava fields; dry shrubland; and dry to mesic forest; often persisting even in highly disturbed habitats.

Elevation Range: 2–2320 m

Historical Distribution

Uses and Culture

USES

  • Lavender dye from fruit

  • Mature, hard wood used for oo (digging sticks) (Krauss 1993:25), musical instrument: ukeke, musical bow (Krauss 1993:85); short spears, including octopus spears (Kamakau 1976:70) and ihe pahee (javelin) (Malo 1951:22); younger, flexible branches for fish net loops (Malo 1951:22); fruits as famine or casual food, lavendar dye & lei (Krauss 1993:16,67,77).

  • To treat ‘ea and pa‘ao‘ao, the leaf buds and seeds ‘ūlei are eaten until the illnesses are gone. To treat open cuts or injuries, the ‘ūlei bark , leaves, and salt are pounded into a mass and applied to the cut (kahi ‘eha) (Chun 1994:250–251).

CULTURE

  • [I] ‘A‘ole i ‘ena‘ena ka imu i ka māmane, me ka ‘ūlei, I ‘ena‘ena i ka la ‘ola‘o. The imu is not heated by māmane, and ‘ūlei wood alone, but also by the kindling. To be powerful, a ruler must have the loyalty of the common people, as well as the chiefs. [II] He ‘ūlei kolo. A creeping ‘ūlei. An expression applied to a tough, strong person. The wood of the ‘ūlei is very strong and was used as a fishing spear in older times.

PROPAGATION/CULTIVATION

  • The round white fruit of Osteomeles anthyllidifolia is 3/8 inch in diameter and has white to purple flesh. The fruit contains 3 or 4 hard seeds that are small and yellowish.
  • Osteomeles anthyllidifolia is easy to propagate from fully mature seeds. The seeds should be removed from the white outer pulp. Lilleeng-Rosenberger suggests ripening the fruit in a plastic bag to soften the pulp. After this, the seeds can be removed from the pulp more easily. This can be done by rubbing the fruits in a strainer under running water, or by manually crushing the fruits in a bowl of water to separate the seeds from the pulp. Pour off the lighter fruit pieces and any seeds that float. Wash the remaining seeds thoroughly. At this point they can be dried on a paper towel for planting or storing.
  • Bornhorst says that soaking the seeds in water for 1 or 2 days will enhance germination. Boche recommends soaking the seeds for 3 to 7 days. Sow the seeds on the top of a well-drained, porous mix such as 1 part potting soil to 1 part perlite or cinder. Seeds germinate in 2 to 6 months.
  • In his germination studies, Obata found that untreated seeds of Osteomeles anthyllidifolia had germination rates ranging from 5 to 30%. Yoshinaga found that seeds of Osteomeles anthyllidifolia lose viability after a year of being stored at room temperature and ambient humidity. However, seeds had good viability after being stored for the same length of time at 39 degrees F (normal refrigerator temperature) and relative humidity of 10% or less. This low humidity can be obtained using silica gel in an airtight container. (Boche 1994; Bornhorst 1996; Criley 1998; Criley 1999; Lilleeng-Rosenberger 1998; NTBG 1992; Obata 1967; Wagner 1990; Yoshinaga 1998)
  • Osteomeles anthyllidifolia can be grown from cuttings. Boche recommends taking cuttings in the early spring. NTBG suggests using semi-hardwood cuttings 6 to 8 inches long with at least 3 nodes. Bornhorst recommends cuttings 2 to 4 inches long and using rooting hormone, but no concentration is given. Stick the cuttings in a well-drained, porous mix such as 1 part potting soil to 1 part perlite or cinder. Keep the cuttings moist and they will root in about 3 months.
  • Criley found that 67% of firm tip cuttings rooted eight weeks after being treated with 6,000 parts per million (ppm) of the rooting hormone IBA. These cuttings were grown under an intermittent mist system which ran for 6 to 8 seconds every 5 or 6 minutes using 30% shade cloth. (Boche 1994; Bornhorst 1996; Criley 1998; Criley 1999; NTBG 1992) [Data from Herring, E. C., & Criley, R. A. (2003).
